View The Work
Dr. Yolanda Sanchez was born in Havana, Cuba and immigrated to the United States at the age of seven. She received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University in 1979 and practiced and taught psychology at the graduate level for 26 years. To express herself more creatively, Yolanda returned to school in her mid thirties first receiving a Bachelor in Fine Arts, subsequently earning a Masters in Fine Arts from Yale University in painting. As a Fulbright scholar, Sanchez completed a fellowship in Spain where she studied both classical and contemporary Spanish painting, forming a basis for her own work. Currently Dr. Sanchez serves as Director of Fine Arts & Cultural Affairs at Miami International Airport and her work is exhibited nationally and internationally.
The Miami artist's enchanting oils inspire a deeper experience of the present, her combination of rich, calligraphic lines and washes of color evoke an abstract garden. Through a layering of open forms and feelings, the engaging work of Yolanda Sanchez tempts the viewer to look further into her vision. The surface marks and materials themselves subtly encourage contemplation and provide a sensory experience unlike any other.
"The artist employs a vibrant color palette reminiscent of the luxury of Caribbean foliage," said Bruce Dempsey, director of J. Johnson Gallery. "Jennifer Johnson and I responded immediately to the vitality in Yolanda's work while visiting her studio in Miami. Her approach to painting is remarkably fresh; vibrant colors and diversified brushstrokes leap off and melt into the canvas simultaneously. Sanchez boldly incorporates the white of the surface into her composition."
"Yolanda's application of materials is poetic," said Dempsey. "She juxtaposes soft washes and gentle drippings with dynamic and vigorous brushstrokes, reminiscent of work by Cy Twombly."
