James Bohary

View The Work

James Bohary divides his time between New York City, upstate New York, Puerto Rico, and Newfoundland, Canada. His densely-painted abstract paintings are influenced by these diverse surroundings. Bohary allows the variety of these locations — the movement of whales, 15,000 year old icebergs, the ancient tree fern, the constant movement of urban centers, the reflection of light on a slow-moving river — to shape his imagination. Each painting is truly distinct and has its own time, place and temperature.

Since 1971, Bohary has exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe. His recognitions include a Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant, an NEA Grant, and an American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Award. The Corcoran Gallery of Art; the Hood Museum; the Weatherspoon Art Center, and the Snite Museum at Notre Dame University all include his work in their collections. Bohary is currently on the art faculty of Binghamton University in New York and has been a visiting professor at Dartmouth College.
